The single biggest factor in metal-roof color stability is the paint system. There are three tiers — knowing which is on your quote is essential.

The values must be CRRC-rated aged values — independently certified by the Cool Roof Rating Council after a 3-year weathering exposure test. Standard galvalume or bare-metal coatings often fail Title 24. PVDF cool-roof coatings clear easily; specifically pigmented PVDF formulations are tuned for high aged SR. The colors that pass most easily are lighter (off-white, weathered gray, light bronze, sandstone). Very dark colors require specialty "cool dark" pigment systems — they cost more and are produced by fewer manufacturers, so quote price may surprise you if you specify a dark metal roof.

Snap-lock panels connect via a male/female interlocking edge — installer presses the seam closed by hand. Faster install, lower cost, works on 3:12+ slopes. Mechanically seamed panels use a power tool to bend the seam into a 90-degree or 180-degree fold — water-tight at lower slopes (down to 1:12), better long-term performance, higher cost. For most LA pitched-roof homes (4:12 to 8:12), snap-lock is the right answer. Low-slope or commercial-style architecture calls for mechanically seamed.
This applies to LA homeowners who built within the last 10 years and have an active builder warranty. Generally: changing the roof material voids the structural and weatherproofing portion of the builder warranty (Insurance-backed warranties like 2-10 HBW have specific clauses).
